Fasthosts WordPress Hosting Problems

After numerous 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable, 504 Gateway Time-out and 502 Bad Gateway on a large number of client sites Fasthosts have told me this…

According to requirements (http://wordpress.org/plugins/woocommerce/installation/) it needs PHP 5.2.4 or greater to be present on the server.  However, the version on the Fasthosts system at the moment is 5.2.17.  Sadly I cannot forcefully request the PHP version be updated as such upgrades are dictated by the engineers schedule, testing and so on.  Though I cannot say this is the definite cause to the problems being had, it is a possibility.

Given the restrictions and apparent limitations of the shared platform, I can only direct you to running the site on a dedicated or virtual solution (where you can control such things as the version of PHP in use).

So it looks like the Woocommerce plugin is the problem and I’m going to have to tell this client they’ll have to either move hosting or upgrade to a much more expensive hosting option.

Then I started thinking, firstly there’s 15 websites with these problems and only 1 other running Woocommerce. Secondly, why would WooCommerce, one of the leading eCommerce toolkits for WordPress, need higher requirements than WordPress itself. So I checked and the obvious answer is correct, it doesn’t.

July 4, 2011 WordPress version 3.2 was released and it’s minimum  requirement is PHP 5.2.4 http://codex.wordpress.org/Version_3.2

Sadly, Fasthosts say, their system runs under the minimum  requirements needed to run the latest version of WordPress and they are not looking at updating it. Where does that leave their customers? This one has to look for somewhere else to host their client’s sites.
